Given the inevitable death of the Western release of LA, I’ve decided to try out FFXIV again. Also, since most old players are knees deep in this FOMO routine, any requests from others are shut down as they want to protect what’s theirs and they are used to (sounds familiar?).Īll the above creates a toxic cycle of burning users out through top-down milking (whales down to f2p). Players who gatekeep new players from legion raids through ilvls and capitalize on them through bus culture. Not to mention the management’s terrible attempts at controlling the rampant RMT & bots at the expense of punishing legitimate players. The RNG is embedded in everything to keep you hooked in. However it’s reached its end for me with its predatory f2p model to play in the endgame, and the lack of immersion due to roster building mechanics - You don’t care about your characters, you just gotta do your dailies/weeklies across all of them, just to progress (1-20% success rate). The combat was smooth and it had hundreds of hours of content available to enjoy. The last game that I enjoyed was Lost Ark. People no longer want to spend time just enjoying the world and others in it. People want to rush to endgame, people want to swipe through if they have to. Despite their classic server releases that I’ve also played, I realized that the player culture is no longer the same. They couldn’t cure my nostalgia for the level of immersion old-school MMOs had (Lineage 2, WoW vanilla). However, despite trying to find home in many other games, none of them really hit the spot. It has built up an image of a game and playerbase that I frowned upon over time.

Never have I considered going back, especially with the community being heralded as the epitome of white knights, sjws and keyboard warriors. The slow leveling curve, level synced fates that gave you virtually no skills, the never-ending cringe english VA cutscenes, the awfully slow combat, the dead PvP mode… all of these factors made me quit the game for other fast-paced MMOs with fun action. I’ve recently got back into the world of Eorzea after quitting in 3.1.

Understands why it has captured hearts of many and why they defend it. TL DR: burnt out MMO player quits predatory game, LA.
